- Abstract
- Date of Birth: Circa 1884 Place of Birth: Marsea Velinske Gubernia Russia Abstract: Sylvia was married in Russia and had a daughter. Shortly after the persecution of the Jews began, her husband fled Russia. Then came the pogroms and Jews everywhere were being killed. Sylvia wrote her husband pleading to get her family out. In 1906 Sylvia and Sadie, along with her mother, brother and sister set sail on The Amsterdam. The nine day crossing was extremely difficult. From her first days in America, Sylvia wanted to adapt. She hired Ben Kaplan, a high school boy, to teach her English. Sylvia became very involved in the cultural activities in Hartford. She attended numerous concerts and lectures and was active in the Labor Lyceum, a socialist organization. She witnessed the opening of the Bulkeley Bridge with much celebration and fanfare. Over the years she worked to help those in need. She often attended Hadassah and synagogue meetings, card parties and always enjoyed reading her favorite newspaper, the Forward.

- Abstract
- Place of Birth: Luge, Poland Occupation: vice-president of the General Elevator Company Abstract: Mark Sobotka emigrated to the US from Luge, Poland twenty-five years ago. He was a member of the board of directors of the Jewish Community Center as well as a founder of the Jewish Cultural Committee. It was the Jewish Cultural Committee that was responsible for organizing the Jewish Historical Society in 1971. He described the life and attire as well as the role, influence and importance of the Chasidic rabbis in the town of Gerra, Poland, where many people in surrounding towns came for advice and help. Mr. Sobotka recounted his experiences during the war. He was sent to a DP camp in Munich. He administered the food rations until the camp was liquidated a year later. He came to Hartford because of the presence of a cousin. He worked his way up to the vice-president of an elevator company.
